You won’t find God stuck in the past. You’ll notice His handiwork and recognize His workings. But He’s not stuck back there.
His name is not I Was. His name is I Am.
If we obsess over what God did last, we might just miss what He wants to do next. God’s at work right here, right now. God’s always at work. Always doing something new.
So go ahead and build altars to mark holy moments in the past; but the purpose of altars is to remind us of God’s faithfulness in our past so we have the faith to believe in His activity within our present.
We recognize and celebrate the past, but we’re to have a forward focus.
God is just as active in the here and now. And He promises to be with us in the midst of all our tomorrows.
We’re meant to live out of our present imagination and dreams. We’re meant to live with a future focus. Listen to Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian church and how every verb is a current, active one – not a past tense prayer.
14 When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, 15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might even ask or imagine. 21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen. -Ephesians 3:14-21
Don’t become stuck simply living off a memory from long ago.
Ask God for new “yet to come” memories. God is active today, in this moment, in this season of your life.
You can never out dream God…
