There is a drastic difference between speaking AT someone or speaking INTO someone.
In our world – there is a lot of speaking AT…
They say we are prone to see 1 million advertising messages a day. Ok, that’s not quite right, but doesn’t it feel that way? We’re surrounded by voices and messages speaking at us. We are used to being spoken AT, but we long to be spoken INTO.
It’s why you walk away feeling 10 feet tall when someone you love or admire encourages you.
One of the ways we’re given credibility to speak INTO someone’s life is to have a good or growing relational connection with them. It takes investment to develop trust and grow a relationship. It’s in that development we open ourselves to wanting to hear from the other.
The truth is: those we care about and those that care about us have ‘sway’ in our lives. Their voice carries weight and we’re able to receive more readily because of the relational investment that resides between us.
The higher our relational connection, the greater that person’s sway in our life.
Just like your momma always said, “who you hang around has influence on you.”
Choose wisely who you let speak INTO your life.
Let God’s Word speak INTO you:
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. -Hebrews 4:12
Allow trusted friends and family to speak INTO you.
Use your voice and life to speak INTO others.
Learn to listen well to those who listen well to God.
And while we’re at it, let’s try to find some sabbath times from all those who speak AT us. Quiet is a good thing. Unplugging is necessary at times.
